Private Cloud – Real World Use Cases
It is by now a cliché that most IT organizations are planning a sea change IT infrastructure strategy that includes Cloud Computing. Private Cloud is an elementary part of this tactic. Building a Private Cloud is not a foregone conclusion , even for enterprises who desire to manage infrastructure and applications in-house. With virtualization and Private Cloud, CIOs are much nearer to the goal of efficient and dynamic IT service delivery capability.
It introduces a new architecture that might make it challenging for developers to migrate their existing applications. It is certainly not a wolf in sheep's clothing . The question is, how will private clouds be used, and what are the downstream effects of moving on it?
The most common query has been, what kind of real world applications can be successfully deployed in Private Cloud environments? Common use case of it is to provide dynamic desktop allocation, especially for teaching, research, and projects use cases. Another service-based use case is self-service access for students and faculty, using pooled resources, not only for application services but also for full VDI desktop allocation.
However, most cloud-migrant workloads deployed on Private Clouds today still tend to be server-based. It is still focused on servers, not services, but provides a vital part of the learning curve.
Dev / Test Environment : Consistent, reproducible environments improve consistency between development and test environments. Self-service option helps productivity and, significantly, avoids many issues such as variable workloads, much larger scale, and more multifaceted deployment topologies which are more complicated to manage in a manual fashion.
Collaboration and Messaging Services : Cloud solutions can be proven convenient, powerful, and cost-effective in bringing diverse and distributed teams together. Companies are turning to Private Cloud solutions to overcome the productivity and continuity challenges of distributed workforces. sharepoint, web-based collaboration services such as email, person-to-person workflow processes, unified communications, calendar, address book, wiki, announcements, notifications, alerts, text chat, instant messaging, search, document management, locking, versioning, profile sharing, discussion forums, grouping of messages into threads, setting up community of practice blogs, social bookmarking, RSS feeds, desktop sharing, audio-video conferencing, recording of sessions, distribution project management, task lists, multidirectional workflows, and portal.
Seasonal and Scalable Web / Mobile Applications [3-tier (App / DB / WS), IDEs, source code management Tools, etc.]: Clustering capabilities for load-balancing and scalability purpose, which can be considered as truly elastic, especially with respect to their back-end databases.
Analytics on Cloud : short-term number crunching of big data (including BI applications) in actuarial science, financial services, insurance, telecommunications, retail, travel, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, whether forecasting and other fields to utilize data to provide financial risk insight, cost analysis, and defect analysis for better business decision making. Resource provisioning in the twinkling of an eye, scalability, and elasticity of Private Cloud have made the life easier than earlier. By and large Private Cloud is the space where BI can be considered as feasible use-case.
Engineering Applications : Engineering firms move their design project systems (particularly CAD tools) into Private Clouds so engineers can fire up new design projects on-demand.
Central Government Services : Existing back office systems, such as payroll, accounting and personnel management, will be virtualized and hosted in the Private Cloud. The ultimate goal of the project is to reduce the total cost of ownership by eliminating redundant systems and the need for administrators in each ministry. Private Cloud is preferred when privacy and security are major concerns.
Mission Critical Applications : As it's appropriately said, f or everything there is a season . As you go from strength to strength once experience is gained in migrating above applications; convert CRM, SFA, Integrated computer-based system used to manage internal and external resources, including tangible assets, financial resources, materials, and human resources, software for managing human resources functions within companies, applications that are specifically designed for sales functions such as pricing, commission tracking, etc. and applications for managing financial processes ranging from expense processing and invoicing to tax management.
